Why Local
Local is good for you (and tastes better too!)
When a fruit or vegetable can be picked in the morning and then purchased from Elm City Market that same afternoon, the freshness can't be beat. Local and regional foods are fresher, and are often left to ripen on the vine and then picked at the peak of flavor. The nutrient value of fruits and vegetables decline at a steady rate after being picked, so the fresher they are, the better they are for you. Eat at the peak of freshness for optimal health benefits and taste! Nourish your family. Discover local foods. At Elm City Market, fresh delicious food is just the beginning.
Local is good for your budget
Local foods, especially fresh fruit and vegetables, are often available seasonally. When you buy foods in season, they are often more abundant and affordable. View the availability of Connecticut Grown product from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture here.
Local is good for our local economy
Co-ops promote a strong community by supporting local producers. Every $1 spent at Elm City Market has roughly 3 times the local economic impact as $1 spent at a non-local business. Buying local foods invests in the local economy by keeping money in the area and supporting local farmers and producers.
Local is good for the environment
Buying local means less pollution and more green space! On average, food travels 1,500 - 2,500 miles to the grocery store - and all those miles translate into a lot of used fossil fuels and the resulting carbon emissions and pollution. When we choose local products, we are working to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and helping to keep pollutants out of the environment.
Local community and connection
Co-ops demonstrate that people can come together to fulfill common goals through a system of self help and equality, to connect with others and to help build a strong community. It all comes together at Elm City Market.
Elm City Market offers fun and educational classes, tastings, events and store tours for adults, kids and families. Discover a world of cooking, food, nutrition and wellness while connecting with your food community.
