Reuse Your Shopping Bags

  • You can also choose to donate your bag credit to a local non-profit organization, instead of receiving the credit off of your purchase. Your cashier will give you a wooden nickel for each bag. Choose between 3 organizations to deposit your wooden nickels in by the exit.

Buy in Bulk

  • Save by buying just the amount you need and not paying for extra packaging.
  • Bring your own containers (make sure they are clean) and have a cashier weigh the empty container before filling. Free paper and plastic bags are also available.

Buy in Season

  • Fruits and Vegetables are plentiful when in season.
  • When buying out-of-season, consider frozen. Vegetables and fruits like corn, beans, peas, and berries are healthier and more flavorful than canned. You’ll also waste less as they keep longer than fresh vegetables.
  • Freeze or can seasonal fruits and vegetables. Learn more here.

Read the article for an additional list of ingredients that will make your pantry and your cooking come more alive.
  • You can add to your pantry week by week like buying more high fiber foods – whole wheat cous cous one week, barley the next, brown rice etc. For Noodles, rice noodles one week, soba noodles the next, etc Being a member of a coop can make buying healthy food frugal. Shopping at ethnic markets can also keep your grocery bill low. Other cost cutting grocery tips are to buy fruits and vegetables in season, frequent the farmers market to get discounts on produce, buy in bulk when you can, plan your meals around what you already have and what is on sale. You will be surprised how many meals you can make with a well stocked pantry.
